Can I haul broker freight under the age of 21 , if it be intrastate?
The only restrictions would be securing commercial truck insurance and CDL licensing. This would vary from state to state. Check with your state as to the requirements of age and reaching out to a few insurance carriers would be a good start.
ASKING FOR MORE INFORMATION ON TRAINING AND INSURANCE JOBS AVIALBLE TO BECOME A BROKER AGENT
Hello I am sort of new to the freight broker industry. I’ve served in the military in a transportation company (all 18 wheel tractor trailers) but doing the administrative part for 20 years. So the paperwork is okay with me and dispatching out trucks is also okay. I’m now out of the military and would like to continue with the skills that I have learned over the years. I’ve taken a freight brokers course with DOTAuthority.com to become a freight broker but at this point I believe I should become an agent and not have the stress of a broker. I’m looking for a broker who is established in the industry and willing to take on a newbie like myself. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
As an agent for a broker, you would be required to do virtually everything a broker does…secure new accounts, dispatch trucks and so paperwork. If financing is the only issue, then you would also be a good candidate for factoring, which would provide the missing element. Most carriers will work with you directly if you are backed by a factor.
Would you rather split profits down the middle with a broker or pay a factor 2% to 5% of the gross? Let’s work through an example. If you have a shipment that grosses $1,000 with an $800 truck fee and $200 profit margin, you would make $100 and the broker would make $100. In the same transaction with a factor, even if you paid the high end rate of 5%, the factoring fee would be $50 and you would keep $150.
In addition, you would maintain your independence and the relationship with your customer would be a 2 way relationship with you and them, not a 3 way relationship with the broker.
In the event you wanted to part ways with the broker that you represented, again, you may be in violation of the broker-agent agreement you signed and may lose the account all together.
Finally, if you have spent a few years building up someone else’s company and reputation and leave, then you would be starting from scratch to build your own company brand.
Very good points you have made there, but I don’t have the money at this time for the $10,000 bond. All the other aspects on opening up a company is easy except getting the $10,000 bond. I did check into getting a bond and it would cost me approx. $200 a month on which I can’t afford at this time, so I thought I would get my feet wet first by learning the business and make some money then try to open up a freight brokers company later down the road.
Read you broker-agent agreement carefully, and make sure you have options that protect you and your customer base if you should decide later to get your brokers license later.
Thanks for the great advise all I need now is a broker to hire me and you can be sure that I will point out all what you had told me before signing up with that broker because one day I just might be a broker and I need my options to be open to take my clients with me. Thank you so much for your in sight.

Well , I didn’t know the Broker’s bond costs that much a month ! When I was still doing it it cost me $50/month. Depends also on the company that gave you the quote. There may be better alternatives on the market.
The factoring, in the beginning is going to keep 10% of the price of bills for at least 30 days. They also do their own credit check on brokers , so if you start alone at this … might be a good idea to call them and ask them BEFORE working with a shipper/carrier.
I had a contract with a carrier for 30 days pay … and after 5 days they started calling and asking “where is their money”. I paid that carrier the following day, and after that he NEVER received any runs from me anymore, no matter how stranded I was with the trucks in a certain area.
